Introduction
The tiny red text in the linking image on the left says "Look into This".
The Notebooks here deal with how to run these machines. For a general overview of them, see A (Brief) Hot Metal Taxonomy. For a detailed look at them, see Linotype and Intertype Linecasters [& Ludlows].
Operating a Linotype or Intertype Composing Linecaster
I was able to do this at Larry Raid's Linotype University VI in 2008 (fun!) Pending getting my own machines operating, I need to write up my class notes here. There's more to it than just typing. [NOT DONE]
Makeready with Slugs
[NOT DONE] How to read slugs, cut slugs, assemble slugs, make up a galley, proof it, correct it, impose it, and lock it up in a chase. At this point it can be by ordinary letterpress methods just like hand set type.
Operating a Monotype Composing Typecaster
Nope, no Monotype here, alas. I'm probably just listing it in the (certainly vain) hope that someday someone will discard a Monotype in my general direction so that I can, indeed, learn how to operate it and document the process here. [So, regrettably, for now this is NOT DONE.]
Bibliography
This is a link up-and-over to the Annotated Bibliography in the Linotype and Intertype Linecasters (& Ludlows)" Notebook. The bibliography for material makers such as the Elrod slugcaster is there too. I don't yet have a real section for composing typecasters (Monotype). [Hey, this IS partly done! Books and bibliography are easier than mechanics.]
A 2008 search of the USPTO records indicated that while "LINOTYPE" remains a trademark in category 9 for software and typefaces, the original trademark in category 7 for a "machine for producing type bars" / "typesetting machine" (registered 1909-06-29) had expired in both its original and later registrations
A 2008 search of the USPTO records indicated that the trademark "INTERTYPE", originally registered 1913-06-03, was expired.
A 2008 search of the USPTO records indicated that the trademark "LUDLOW" in category 7 for printing machinery, registered 1949-11-01, was expired. A search for "ELROD" discovered no trademark registration at all.
