James A. St. John

image link-topic-sf0.jpg

Co-proprietor of the Central Type Foundry and, later, also the Boston Type Foundry

We know from Loy's article on Schroeder that St. John suggested the design of Art Gothic to Schroeder based on commercial lettering that he had seen on a soap box.

A portrait of St. John appeared in Henry Lewis Bullen's "Discursions of a Retired Printer," No. 10 ( Inland Printer, Vol. 39, No. 2 (May 1907): 193-198)
