The Holtzapffels

"The White Rabbit put on his spectacles. 'Where shall I begin, please your Majesty?' he asked.

"'Begin at the beginning,' the King said gravely, ' and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

"These were the verses the White Rabbit read: --

Holtzapffel. TMM Vol. II: Hand Cutting Tools. (1875)

This volume is available as page images at The Hathi Trust from a scan of the University of Illinois Urbana Champagne copy. The icon at left links to a PDF assembled by me from 50 percent reductions of JPEG conversions of these images (but it is still 170 Megabytes). The full-available-resolution version as a PDF of un-shrunk PNGs is quite large (691 Megabytes). Here is a link to it: holtzapffel-vol-2-1875-hathitrust-uiug-30112008305978.pdf. I'm not entirely sure why the images are that large, as they are not of particularly high resolution. If this scan was done by Google Books, I have not yet been able to locate Google's presentation of the same.

Abell, Leggat and Odgen, in their Bibliography of the Art of Turning indicate that this 1875 edition of Vol. II was reprinted in 1983 by the Early American Industries Association.

The 1875 edition of Vol. II was reprinted in 1993 by The Astragal Press under the title Holtzapffel's Turning and Mechanical Manipulation: Volume II: Construction, Action and Application of Cutting Tools . Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 93-71233. ISBN: 1-879335-39-5.

Holtzapffel, Charles. Turning and Mechanical Manipulation Vol. III. Abrasive and Miscellaneous Processes, which Cannot be Accomplished with Cutting Tools. (London: Holtzapffel & Co., 1850.) Abell, Leggat and Odgen, in their Bibliography of the Art of Turning indicate that Vol. III was published posthumously by Charles Holtzapffel's widow, Amelia.

This volume has also been digitized by Google Books from the Bodleian Library copy. Here is a local copy of that PDF holtzapffel-vol-3-1850-google-oxford--Turning_and_mechanical_manipulation.pdf. Here is another copy of the same scan, curiously stripped of front matter by Google, as archived by The Internet Archive: holtzapffel-vol-3-1850-google-oxford-via-archive-org-turningandmecha00holtgoog.pdf This digitization from the Bodleian is not presently (2012) available via The Hathi Trust.

Holtzapffel. TMM Vol. V: Ornamental Turning (1884)

Holtzapffel, John Jacob. Turning and Mechanical Manipulation Vol. V. The Principles and Practice of Ornamental or Complex Turning (London: For the Author by Holtzapffel & Co., 1884.)

I have scanned this volume from my own copy. It isn't a great scan, but at the time I did it this volume was not available online. Given the importance of this volume to the history not only of Ornamental Turning but of technology in general, this was a situation which needed to be corrected. The icon at left links to a presentation of this scan at The Internet Archive. Here is a local copy of the PDF (it is 1 Gigabyte in size, and 697 PDF-pages long): holtzapffel-vol-5-1884-0300rgbjpg-dmm.pdf

Technical note: Of the several files available on The Internet Archive, the one I uploaded is the big PDF file (the same one linked above: holtzapffel-vol-5-1884-0300rgbjpg-dmm.pdf). This is a single PDF file generated by concatenating together 300 dpi RGB JPEG-format lossy conversions of the original page scans. The other files available on The Internet Archive are automatically derived from it by their system. If you should wish to make a derivative version of this which looks prettier (e.g., pages cropped properly), feel free to do so; it is in the public domain. If you would like to do the same but want to do it from the original page scans (done at 600dpi RGB, saved losslessly as PNG images), let me know. I'd like there to be a better version available, but do not have the time to make one. These page scans come to 28 Gigabytes, so I'd have to send them via physical media (it would take 7 DVDs). My only condition would be that the resulting work be left in the public domain. Holtzapffel is an important part of the history of technology, and this volume is a century and a quarter old; electronic editions of it should be free for all to use.

This 1894 edition of Vol. IV was reprinted in 1973 by Dover Publications under the title The Principles and Practice of Ornamental or Complex Turning. ISBN 0-486-22965-3. With a new introduction to the Dover edition by Robert Austin.

Holtzapffel. TMM Vol. VI

The sixth volume of this series, which was to have been "The Principles and Practice of Amateur Mechanical Engineering," was never completed or published.

John Edwards has published in CD-ROM format a "Compendium of rare or previously un-published material related to the art and craft of Ornamental Turning" under the title Holtzapffel Volume VI. Rather than attempting to complete the Holtzapffels' projected volume on amateur mechanical engineering, Edwards presents instead "a new volume [devoted to] the many known ornamental turning techniques and accessories that had not been included in Volume V." Edwards' CD-ROM is a splendid compilation which is indeed a fitting completion of the Holtzapffels' series on Turning and Mechanical Manipulation. For ordering information, see John Edwards' website at: http://www.ornamentalturning.co.uk/for_sale_wanted.htm

Someday, perhaps, someone will do a "Holtzapffel Volume VII" on amateur mechanical engineering.
