A History of Rolling Ball Toys

"Pike's Peak"

In an antique shop in Allen, Michigan, I ran across an old coin-operated game called "Pike's Peak." It was "desktop" in size (as opposed to freestanding) and priced at US$595 (1996). At this price, it may still be there. The label indicated that it was manufactured by "Groetchen," but I was not able to determine a date. You got five balls for a penny. It consisted of eight tiers of sloping channels, each tier smaller than the one below and sloped in the opposite direction. There were also wires running along the slopes. The object of the game was to jump your marble from one tier to the next higher tier - ultimately to the top.
