Matthew by day

1995. 41"x41"x 12" Wall-mounted. 3/4" chrome steel balls, 3/16" diameter black painted steel rails. In 1995 this sculpture was exhibited at Bumbershoot, the Seattle art fair.

This is a beautiful sculpture, elegant in its lines and motions, with many subtle details. It uses a mechanical variant on the archimedean screw to raise the balls, and features multiple paths, binary switches, reversing ball paths, a springy helix, loops, and a number of other devices. The composition is harmonious and the level of finish is high.

In the images below, the artist indicates that "the background is a cloudy verdigris color, the top and bottom of the cabinet are purple and the rails are black." The sculpture is covered by a curved Lexan sheet.

Springee Thingees

Gary has also invented a wonderful "executive toy" called the "Springee Thingee." It consists of a spring mounted on the end of a pencil or pen, where the eraser of a pencil would usually be. (Erasers can be mounted on the end of the Springee Thingee, as well.) Inside this spring is a ball bearing of approximately the same diameter as the inside diameter of the spring. When the Springee Thingee is tilted beyond a certain critical angle, the ball inside doesn't simply bounce down - rather, it begins to follow the helical curve of the spring itself. The effect is captivating.

Efforts are underway to put Springee Thingees into commercial production for the holiday 1998 season. (They may be called "Spring-Things" at that time.)

Aries 1

1999. 32cm high x 32cm wide x 30cm deep. Freestanding. This is the first in a series of small rolling ball sculptures that the artist will market. Its name derives from the horn motif at the top. The track is 1/16 inch stainless steel TIG welding rod. The balls are 1/4 inch in diameter. Click on the thumbnail images below for larger images.
